Chapter 1: First Day of School

There’s something unforgettable about the first day of school.

Not because everything goes according to plan, but because nothing ever really does.

Long before students fill the classroom, you've imagined this day more times than you can count. You picture yourself greeting each student with confidence. You rehearse introductions in your head. You straighten the books on your shelves one more time, erase a board that was already clean, and check your lesson plans as if reading them one last time will quiet the butterflies in your stomach.

Then the bell rings.

The classroom you've carefully prepared begins to take on a life of its own. Conversations start before you've spoken a word. Backpacks land with a thud. Some students smile as they walk through the door. Others avoid eye contact altogether. A few seem determined to find the limits before you've had the chance to introduce yourself.

And just like that, the picture you created in your mind gives way to reality.

The first day has a way of reminding us that teaching isn't about controlling every moment. It's about learning to move with them.

There will be things you forget to say.

A name you'll mispronounce.

An activity that doesn't go quite the way you imagined.

You may leave wondering if you did enough.

Most teachers do.

What students often remember, though, isn't whether every part of your lesson went perfectly. They remember how your classroom made them feel.

Did they feel welcome?

Did they feel safe enough to ask a question?

Did they believe they mattered before they ever opened a textbook?

Those moments rarely make it into a lesson plan, yet they become the foundation for everything that follows.

Looking back, the first day isn't really about introducing yourself to your students.

It's about being introduced to the teacher you're becoming.

With every conversation, every unexpected interruption, and every small success, you begin to understand that confidence doesn't arrive before the first day.

It grows because of it.

The classroom has a way of teaching the teacher.

And perhaps that's the lesson we spend an entire career learning.

Tomorrow, you'll unlock the same classroom door with a little more understanding than you had today.

Not because you've mastered teaching overnight.

But because you've taken the first step.

Every school year begins with a first day.

Every teacher begins with a first step.

And neither one has to be perfect to matter.

If today's reflection reminded you of your own beginning—or encouraged you as you prepare for one—know that this is only the start of the journey.

Class Is in Session: The Expectant Teacher Survival Handbook expands on these experiences with practical strategies, honest encouragement, and real-life lessons for educators preparing for their first classroom or finding their footing along the way. It's a reminder that growth—not perfection—is what makes a great teacher.

Continue your journey: https://www.amazon.com/author/byshantel

Every Teacher Has a “Perfect Day” Until They Don’t

Before the classroom keys land in your hand, before the lesson plans, before the first parent email, there’s a version of teaching that lives entirely in your imagination.

The desks are perfectly arranged.

The students are eager to learn.

Every lesson flows exactly as planned.

You leave each afternoon knowing you made a difference.

It’s a beautiful picture.

Then the first day arrives.

A copier jams five minutes before class. A student cries because they miss home. Another refuses to participate. Your carefully planned lesson somehow ends twenty minutes too early—or twenty minutes too late.

Suddenly, teaching feels less like a performance and more like learning how to dance in the rain.

That’s where Class Is in Session: The Expectant Teacher Survival Handbook begins.

Not with perfection.

With preparation.

Teaching has a way of humbling even the most confident educator. College courses can teach pedagogy, classroom management, and instructional strategies, but they can’t prepare you for every unexpected moment waiting on the other side of your classroom door.

Those moments become your greatest teachers.

Every difficult conversation builds confidence.

Every lesson that falls apart teaches flexibility.

Every student who challenges you teaches patience.

And every small victory reminds you why you chose this profession in the first place.

This blog series is an extension of that journey.

Over the next several weeks, we’ll walk through the lessons inside Class Is in Session, chapter by chapter—not as a checklist to become the perfect teacher, but as a conversation about becoming the teacher your students need.

Because the truth is…

The perfect teaching day rarely looks the way we imagined.

Sometimes it’s the student who finally understands a concept after struggling for weeks.

Sometimes it’s the quiet “thank you” from a child who needed someone to believe in them.

Sometimes it’s simply making it through the day knowing you’ll come back tomorrow and try again.

Perfection was never the goal.

Growth always was.

So whether you’re preparing for your first classroom, beginning your student teaching experience, or standing in front of students wondering if you’re doing enough, know this:

Every great teacher started exactly where you are.

One day.

One lesson.

One student at a time.

And maybe that’s the part no one says out loud often enough.

You don’t arrive great.

You grow into it—quietly, consistently, sometimes uncertainly.

And somewhere along the way, you realize you were never just surviving the classroom.

You were becoming the teacher you once needed.

If this reflection stayed with you, the journey doesn’t end here.

Class Is in Session: The Expectant Teacher Survival Handbook expands on these experiences with practical strategies, honest encouragement, and real-life lessons for educators preparing for their first classroom or finding their footing along the way.
Blog post.

There’s something about August that always feels like a fresh beginning.

For some people, it's January. For me, it's August. Maybe it's because I'm a teacher, and this season naturally brings new routines, fresh expectations, and another opportunity to begin again.

This year, though, I'm approaching August differently.

In July, I tackled the bigger projects. I cleaned out my closet, donated clothes I no longer wore, and finally organized my refrigerator and pantry. Crossing those things off my list felt good—not because my house was perfect, but because it felt lighter.

So, as August begins, I'm not looking for another major overhaul.

I'm focused on maintaining what I've already accomplished.

I think we often put pressure on ourselves to do a complete reset every month. We convince ourselves that if we're not decluttering every room or reorganizing every cabinet, we're somehow falling behind.

I've learned that's simply not true.

Some things are already part of my routine. The dishes get washed. The laundry gets done. My home is lived in, and that's okay. My monthly reset isn't about repeating the things I already do consistently. It's about slowing down long enough to take care of the little things that often get overlooked.

Maybe it's washing the bedding, dusting the ceiling fan, cleaning the mirrors, or organizing one drawer.

Small tasks.

Big difference.

I've realized that a physical reset isn't really about cleaning.

It's about creating a home that supports the life you're living.

When my home feels peaceful, I feel more at peace. When my surroundings are less cluttered, my mind feels less cluttered. It doesn't mean life is perfect—it just means I've created a space where I can rest, recharge, and prepare for whatever the month brings.

This August, I'm choosing progress over perfection.

No marathon cleaning sessions.

No unrealistic expectations.

Just a few intentional moments to care for the place that takes care of me.

Because sometimes maintaining what you've already built is the best reset of all.

If you're creating your own August reset, I'd love for you to join me over on Pinterest. I've been curating inspiration, monthly reset ideas, and simple ways to become more intentional—one small step at a time.

✨ Follow my Quietly Becoming board for inspiration throughout the month:

https://www.pinterest.com/growreadlearn/quietly-becoming/

Here's to an August filled with peace, purpose, and spaces that help us become the people we're growing into. 💛

Calm in the Chaos

Chaos has a way of convincing us that it deserves all of our attention.

It arrives without warning, filling calendars, conversations, and quiet moments with things that feel urgent. Before long, we're moving from one obligation to the next, hoping that if we can just get through today, tomorrow might finally feel lighter.

Sometimes it does.

Sometimes it doesn't.

The truth is, life rarely waits for everything to settle before asking us to keep going.

There are seasons when the noise feels constant.

The unanswered questions.

The unexpected changes.

The moments where we wonder how we are supposed to keep showing up when our own hearts are asking for a pause.

That's where Deuteronomy 31:6 meets us.

"Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you."

There is something powerful about this reminder.

Not because it promises a life without difficulty.

Not because it guarantees every road will be easy.

But because it reminds us that we never walk through uncertainty alone.

Sometimes we spend so much energy asking God to remove the storm that we forget He promised to walk with us through it.

And maybe that is where peace begins.

Not when everything finally makes sense.

Not when every problem has been solved.

But when we remember that God is present in the middle of it all.

The workplace that feels heavy.

The season of waiting.

The conversation you’ve been avoiding.

The responsibility that feels bigger than your strength.

The moments where you quietly wonder, “How am I going to get through this?”

You are not required to have every answer today.

You are not required to be fearless.

You are simply invited to trust.

Because courage was never about the absence of fear.

It was always about moving forward while knowing you are not alone.

There is a difference between control and calm.

Control tells us we have to hold everything together.

Calm reminds us that we were never meant to carry everything by ourselves.

God does not promise that chaos will never come.

He promises that chaos will never have the final word.

So today, if life feels louder than your faith, pause.

Take a breath.

Return to the promise.

The same God who carried you through yesterday is already waiting for you in tomorrow.

And maybe the peace you’re searching for isn't found in a life without storms.

Maybe it's found in knowing who is standing with you in the middle of them.

"Be strong and courageous... for the Lord your God goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you."

— Deuteronomy 31:6

If you’re walking through your own season of uncertainty, searching for moments of peace, faith, and quiet encouragement, you’ll find more reflections like this here:

https://www.pinterest.com/growreadlearn/quietly-becoming/

A place for reminders that growth doesn’t always happen loudly.

Sometimes it happens quietly — one breath, one step, and one moment of faith at a time.

You don’t know my story.

Not really.

You don’t know what I’ve been through, what I had to survive, or what it cost me just to still be standing here. A lot of what shaped me happened in silence, in private moments where no one was watching.

So when you see my worship, you’re not seeing something emotional or performative. You’re seeing survival.

Because what looks like praise on the outside is really remembrance on the inside.

There were seasons where I didn’t know how I would make it through. Times where answers didn’t come, strength ran low, and I had to keep going anyway. And somehow, I did.

That’s why my worship isn’t based on what life looks like now — it’s based on what I’ve already been carried through.

It’s not performance. It’s not emotion without meaning. It comes from knowing I was kept.

Not everything I’ve lived through can be explained to other people. Some things were processed in silence. Some healing happened slowly. And some of the strongest parts of me were formed in seasons no one else saw.

So when I worship, I’m not trying to make it make sense to anyone else.

I’m responding to grace that carried me when I couldn’t carry myself.

“Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.” — Psalm 34:19 (NKJV)

That verse isn’t just something I read — it’s something I’ve lived. Not everything was easy, not everything was clear, but looking back, I can see I was never alone in it.

Even in what felt like silence, I was being held.

There’s a kind of growth that doesn’t announce itself. It doesn’t rush. It doesn’t always look like progress in the moment. It happens quietly — in survival, in healing, in choosing not to give up one more time.

And that kind of becoming changes a person.

That’s what shaped my worship.

Not perfection. Not comfort. Not easy answers.

But survival, grace, and mercy I didn’t earn.

So when I lift my hands, when I say “thank You,” when I keep trusting after everything I’ve seen… it’s not confusion.

It’s clarity.

I’ve been through too much not to worship Him.

And if you understand that kind of quiet becoming — the kind that doesn’t always have words but still changes everything — you might recognize pieces of your own story here:

https://www.pinterest.com/growreadlearn/quietly-becoming/

Forty didn’t arrive quietly.

She came in rearranging everything I thought I had under control.

My time.

My energy.

My tolerance for things I kept calling “fine” when they were really just familiar.

She didn’t ask permission.

She just started showing me what no longer belonged.

Workplaces I stayed in too long.

Conversations that drained more than they gave.

Friendships that required translation instead of truth.

Versions of myself I kept shrinking just to make the room easier for everyone else.

Forty didn’t shout.

She didn’t have to.

She just made things clear in a way I couldn’t unhear.

And clarity… changes the way you carry everything.

Forty-one feels like breath after holding it too long.

It feels like space.

Like distance from noise I didn’t realize I was living inside.

One of the first things I let go of was my hair.

Not as a statement.

Not as a shift anyone needed to witness.

Just a quiet release.

Because sometimes letting go doesn’t announce itself.

It just lands softly in your lap one day and says: you’re done now.

And I was.

Done holding on to versions of me that were built for rooms I no longer belong to.

Especially the workplace kind.

Because some environments don’t announce their weight.

They just settle into you over time.

In meetings where tension sits louder than ideas.

In smiles that don’t quite reach honesty.

In quiet competitions no one admits they’re running.

In the subtle art of making people question themselves instead of the system around them.

And you don’t notice it at first.

Until one day you breathe somewhere else… and realize how heavy it used to be.

I’m not carrying that into forty-one.

Not the confusion.

Not the coded conversations.

Not the emotional labor of decoding what was never meant to be clear.

And not the kind of workplace energy that learned how to dress itself in professionalism while still practicing comparison in the background.

Some of that never grows up.

It just gets better language.

I’ve stopped trying to translate it.

Stopped trying to survive it.

Stopped trying to make myself smaller in order to move through it.

Because here’s what I know now:

If it requires me to constantly second-guess myself, it’s not alignment.

If it thrives on quiet competition, it’s not community.

If it asks me to dim in order to belong, it is not my tribe.

And I don’t say that with noise.

I say it with softness.

With certainty.

With the kind of peace that doesn’t need to prove itself.

At this point, belonging is simple.

If you’re my people, you don’t confuse me.

If you’re not, I don’t contort myself to stay understood.

And if I have to keep explaining my place in the room… it’s probably not my room.

So I choose differently now.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just honestly.

I don’t stay where I leave myself behind.

I don’t explain what keeps getting misread.

I don’t overextend into spaces that don’t extend grace back.

And I don’t confuse endurance with alignment anymore.

Forty taught me the noticing.

Forty-one is teaching me the leaving.

And somewhere in all of that release…

I cut my hair.

But really, I cut the weight.

The noise.

The unnecessary pulling of things I had already outgrown.

And what remains now is simpler than I expected.

Quieter.

Clearer.

Mine.

And if you’re in your own season of quietly becoming, you’ll find more of this space here:

<a href="https://www.pinterest.com/growreadlearn/quietly-becoming/"
Blog post.

There’s a certain kind of night that doesn’t ask for noise — only honesty.

It’s the hour when reflection turns personal, when you stop fixing and start feeling. Heartbreak Reverberations lives there — in the echoes of love lost and lessons learned.

Tamia’s “Stranger in My House” opens this space with a haunting calm. Her voice glides between disbelief and ache, painting the portrait of love gone distant. It’s not just heartbreak; it’s recognition — the quiet realization that something familiar has changed. For teachers, leaders, and nurturers who give endlessly, this track reminds you that even the strongest hearts deserve care, and that clarity can be its own kind of closure.

Then Deborah Cox’s “We Can’t Be Friends” enters — a duet heavy with tension, love, and resignation. Each lyric feels like a conversation you’ve had in your head long after it ended. It’s vulnerability and finality all at once, the kind of honesty that leaves you still, eyes closed, breathing through the ache.

Together, these songs are pure grown energy — emotional honesty without apology. They don’t wallow; they witness. They allow you to sit with heartbreak long enough to see the strength inside it.

This is not sadness — it’s recognition.

The kind that teaches you how to love better, trust deeper, and heal slower.

🎧 Listen to the playlist:

https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLp5Zgl1niMYdZ2Mx-ZsKspcSgW3CFVaFl&si=aTKkFoyE6qUkEFXg

By now, the night has slowed to a heartbeat.

The lights are dim, the world is quiet, and it’s just you — unwinding in your truth.

Segment 4: Deep Soul & R&B is that space where emotions rise to the surface and vulnerability becomes the soundtrack.

Tank’s “Maybe I Deserve” opens the segment like a confession whispered in the dark.

It’s raw, honest, and unguarded — the kind of song that mirrors self-reflection. Tank’s vocals are smooth but heavy with truth; it’s not just about love lost, but accountability found. For educators and givers who carry the emotional weight of others, this track feels like permission to turn that empathy inward.

Then comes Carl Thomas’ “I Wish.”

A timeless classic — drenched in nostalgia and gentle ache. Carl’s voice sounds like memory itself: warm, wistful, and real. It’s the sound of late-night reflection, the kind that plays when you’re thinking about what could’ve been, or simply grateful for what was. His delivery reminds us that even in longing, there’s beauty.

To close, Sam Smith’s “How Do You Sleep?” brings modern edge to timeless emotion. The glossy production carries their soaring vocals through tension and release — a perfect end to this segment’s emotional arc. It’s self-interrogation wrapped in rhythm; a reminder that healing often happens quietly, long after the world has gone still.

Together, these three tracks create a soul-deep moment — a bridge between reflection and renewal.

For teachers, artists, and real ones alike, this segment is a slow, tender exhale — an invitation to sit with your feelings and let the music speak what words can’t.

So tonight, pour something smooth, dim the lights, and let the soul do what it does best — heal you through honesty.

🎧 Listen to the playlist:

https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLp5Zgl1niMYdZ2Mx-ZsKspcSgW3CFVaFl&si=aTKkFoyE6qUkEFXg

There are nights when the music doesn’t just play — it stays. It lingers in the quiet, in the memories you thought you’d tucked away, in the feelings that never fully fade. For the Moments That Still Linger is made for those evenings — grown, raw, and honest.

Lucky Daye and Teyana Taylor’s “Hard Part” opens this space with a rare kind of tenderness. Their voices move together like light and shadow — equal parts ache and acceptance. The song doesn’t beg for closure; it sits in the complexity of love and growth. The “hard part” isn’t leaving — it’s healing. It’s that stretch of time when your heart learns how to hold peace and pain at once.

Then Tank’s “Slow” featuring J. Valentine slides in like silk — a slow, deliberate moment that breathes intimacy. It’s sensual without being loud, romantic without performance. The track carries the weight of understanding — that love, in all its forms, requires presence. It’s the sound of patience, of slowing down enough to feel every beat.

Together, these songs don’t ask you to move on — they ask you to be still in what remains. To honor what’s been felt, what’s been lost, and what still hums under the surface.

Because even when the classroom is dark, the papers are stacked, and the world is quiet, some emotions refuse to fade. And maybe they shouldn’t. Maybe they’re reminders — of passion, of growth, of being alive.

This is music for the real ones. The ones who love deeply, reflect honestly, and still show up — even when the echoes of emotion linger.

🎧 Listen to the playlist:

https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLp5Zgl1niMYdZ2Mx-ZsKspcSgW3CFVaFl&si=aTKkFoyE6qUkEFXg

Blog post.

There’s a certain kind of quiet that follows the music of the day — not silence, but space.

Space to feel, to remember, to let your heart stretch a little.

Segment 3: Soulful Romance & Reflection is where that space turns melodic — where honesty, emotion, and memory intertwine like candlelight and shadows.

The segment opens with Bruno Mars’ “When I Was Your Man,” a song that feels like confession and closure wrapped in one. Bruno’s voice carries both regret and grace, making it the perfect companion for teachers and creatives who give so much of themselves daily. It’s a reminder that even strength has a tender side — and that sometimes reflection means revisiting what’s already been let go.

Then comes Mario’s “Like Her Too.” Smooth and current, it’s the kind of R&B that lives in the soft in-between — a blend of self-awareness and longing. Mario’s tone invites you to slow down, let the rhythm sink in, and maybe rediscover pieces of yourself hidden beneath the day’s to-do lists. This one isn’t about heartbreak; it’s about connection — with yourself, your memories, and your emotions.

To close the segment, J. Valentine’s “Separate Ways” slides in like the last slow dance of the night. The kind where words fade, and what’s left is feeling. It’s pure release — soulful, grown, and sincere. The lyrics hold weight, but the delivery feels like an exhale, the sound of acceptance meeting peace.

Together, these three songs create a moment — a space to reflect, reminisce, and recharge emotionally.

For the teachers who show love every day in a hundred unseen ways, Segment 3: Soulful Romance & Reflection is your reminder that you deserve love, softness, and slow time, too.

So tonight, pour the last of your drink, dim the lights, and let these tracks remind you what it feels like to feel.

🎧 Listen to the playlist:

https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLp5Zgl1niMYdZ2Mx-ZsKspcSgW3CFVaFl&si=aTKkFoyE6qUkEFXg

Some nights don’t need many words — just a mood, a dim light, and a sound that knows what silence feels like.

Slow Burn Sessions is that moment. The room hums low, the world moves in slow motion, and you’re reminded that peace can be as powerful as passion.

D’Angelo’s “Untitled (How Does It Feel)” is pure, timeless heat — slow, deliberate, and unapologetically human. The notes don’t rush; they linger, heavy with feeling. This track is less about romance and more about presence — about taking up space in your own stillness. Every breath, every pause, feels intentional, like it’s teaching you how to be instead of do.

Then Lone Star Lyric House’s “Slow and Country” steps in like a late-night breeze through an open window. It’s laid-back, Southern smooth — the sound of vulnerability dressed in calm confidence. It pairs perfectly with the flicker of a single candle, a slow sip, or the quiet hum of your own heartbeat.

Together, these two tracks don’t just play — they fill the room. They remind you that intimacy isn’t always loud or complicated; sometimes it’s as simple as letting the night unfold in its own rhythm.

This is music for grown energy — for teachers, artists, and real ones who know the beauty of slowing all the way down.

🎧 Listen to the playlist:

https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLp5Zgl1niMYdZ2Mx-ZsKspcSgW3CFVaFl&si=aTKkFoyE6qUkEFXg

There’s a sacred hush that settles once the world slows down — that gentle stretch between tired and peaceful.

That’s where Segment 2: Late-Night Chill lives.

This chapter of Real Ones Only — After Hours (Teacher Edition) isn’t about grading papers or replaying the day’s lessons.

It’s about unwinding the tension in your shoulders, loosening the mind, and letting the night teach you a different kind of lesson — the art of release.

The Teskey Brothers open the door with “Rain.”

It’s the kind of blues that doesn’t just play in the background — it moves through you. The slow guitar riffs feel like raindrops tracing glass, steady and cleansing. You can almost hear the echo of a quiet thought you didn’t know you were still holding. “Rain” doesn’t rush to a resolution; it invites you to feel and to exhale without apology.

Then October London’s “Back to Your Place” slides in — smooth, honey-toned, and utterly grown. It’s a track that doesn’t need to prove anything. The rhythm is slow, steady, like conversation that lingers between comfort and curiosity. It’s the sound of turning off the notifications, dimming the lights, and choosing connection — whether with someone special or just with yourself.

Finally, Teddy Swims’ “Lose Control.”

If the first two songs asked you to unwind, this one dares you to let go. Teddy’s voice rises and falls like a confession, equal parts vulnerability and release. It’s the kind of song that reminds you why music is medicine — it shakes something loose in you, but softly.

Together, these three tracks hold space for the real ones — the educators, the givers, the ones who pour light into others and sometimes forget to refill their own. Segment 2: Late-Night Chill is your refill. It’s warmth in motion — a slow, soulful reminder that rest can be radical and reflection can be sensual.

So tonight, light the candle, pour something amber, and let the music do what it does best — bring you back home to yourself.

🎧 Listen to the playlist:

https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLp5Zgl1niMYdZ2Mx-ZsKspcSgW3CFVaFl&si=aTKkFoyE6qUkEFXg

📖 Read more:

www.edweb.net/growreadlearn

https://www.edweb.net/ShantelPatt_1483105/Blog

https://shantelpatt.com/blog

For those evenings that call for even softer edges and deeper warmth, this bonus duo stands on its own.

Chris Stapleton – “Tennessee Whiskey”

Smooth, smoky, and timeless. This one’s for those candlelit nights when you pour a little something golden and let the room hum low. It’s about savoring stillness — the kind that reminds you it’s okay to just be.

Jazmine Sullivan – “Let It Burn”

Sultry, honest, and unfiltered. Jazmine’s voice glows like a slow flame — the soundtrack to release and renewal. It’s not about heartbreak; it’s about liberation — letting go of the day, the pressure, and the noise.

Together, these tracks embody the essence of After Hours: minimalist soul, grown energy, and peace you can feel down to your bones.

🎧 Listen to the playlist:

https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLp5Zgl1niMYdZ2Mx-ZsKspcSgW3CFVaFl&si=aTKkFoyE6qUkEFXg

Teaching is a rewarding profession, but it comes with its fair share of stress, long days, and emotional labor. By the time the final bell rings, many teachers are mentally exhausted, yet still carrying the weight of the day. That’s where a thoughtful playlist can make all the difference. The Real Ones Only — After Hours (Teacher Edition) playlist was curated to give educators a soulful, reflective, and restorative soundtrack after hours—and the first three tracks, Kendrick Lamar’s “Love,” Drake’s “Jungle,” and Jeezy’s “Almighty Black Dollar,” are the perfect introduction.

The playlist begins with Kendrick Lamar’s “Love”, a song that feels both intimate and expansive. Its smooth, soulful rhythms create a space where you can finally exhale, reflect, and connect with your emotions. Whether you’re sipping tea, journaling, or simply sitting in quiet, this track invites you to focus inward, giving your mind a moment to decompress.

Next, Drake’s “Jungle” deepens the reflective mood. Its slow, hypnotic beats encourage mental wandering, letting the day’s worries drift to the background. For teachers, this is an opportunity to release tension and enter a meditative state—whether it’s contemplating the day’s victories, challenges, or simply embracing the quiet of the evening.

Rounding out the segment is Jeezy’s “Almighty Black Dollar”, which blends introspection with subtle motivation. The song’s steady rhythm and thoughtful lyrics remind you to stay grounded in your values and goals, offering a gentle boost of energy to carry forward. It’s reflection with a hint of purpose—a perfect bridge from emotional release to mindful awareness.

Together, these three tracks create a heartfelt opening to your after-hours routine. Listening to them in sequence forms a mini ritual: a few moments of calm, self-reflection, and recharging. For teachers, this can be the difference between merely surviving after a long day and truly reconnecting with yourself, setting the tone for the rest of your evening.

🎧 Listen now: https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLp5Zgl1niMYdZ2Mx-ZsKspcSgW3CFVaFl&si=aTKkFoyE6qUkEFXg

Blog post.

Some days, the weight of teaching feels heavier than anyone could explain. You walk into your classroom already tired. The stack of papers is taller than your coffee mug, and your smile feels a little forced. You love what you do — you know this is your calling — but lately, it’s been harder to feel the joy in it.

You whisper to yourself, “Lord, this can’t be it forever.”

And you’re right — it won’t always be like this.

There’s a verse that’s carried me through seasons like this one:

“The Lord will perfect that which concerns me.” — Psalm 138:8 (NKJV)

That means every detail — every student, every lesson, every tear you’ve cried after dismissal — He’s working through it all. Nothing is wasted. Nothing is too small for His attention. The Lord is still perfecting the parts of your story that feel unfinished.

The Classroom and the Calling

Teaching isn’t just a job; it’s ministry in motion. It’s showing up for 30 little lives who bring the world into your classroom every day — their hopes, their struggles, their stories. Some days, that’s beautiful. Other days, it’s heavy.

But even in the chaos, you are planting something eternal.

When the lesson falls flat, when you question your impact, when you’re running on fumes — remember that seeds don’t sprout the moment you plant them. The Lord is at work underground, in unseen ways, preparing growth you can’t yet see.

The Turning Point

It’s okay to admit that you’re exhausted. It’s okay to say, “I’m not okay today.” Even the strongest teachers have breaking points — but we serve a God who specializes in turning things around.

“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” — Romans 8:28 (NKJV)

Sooner or later, it will turn in your favor. The peace will return. The passion will reignite. The classroom that feels like a battlefield today will one day remind you why you stayed.

For the Teacher Reading This

Keep showing up — not because it’s easy, but because you’re called. Keep trusting that the Lord is working behind the scenes. Keep believing that this chapter is not the end of your story.

It won’t always be like this.

He’s perfecting the things that concern you.

He’s strengthening you for what’s next.

And yes — it’s turning around for you.

Blog post.

Now, let’s go ahead and get one thing straight — I run a very organized household. Or at least, I try to. Between kids, chaos, and trying to hold on to a little peace, I need structure wherever I can get it. So I’ve decided: the calendar year doesn’t run on months anymore — it runs on vibes.

From October 1st through 31st, it’s Halloween Season. Spooky Season. Candy everywhere, skeletons on the porch, and me pretending not to eat the Reese’s I swore were “for the trick-or-treaters.” There’s something about October — the smell of cinnamon, the cozy sweaters, the feeling that the world’s about to change — that makes me slow down a little. But not too much, because those costumes don’t make themselves. 🎃

Then, like clockwork, on November 1st, I flip the switch. That’s right — it’s Christmas Season. Yes, I said what I said. We don’t wait until after Thanksgiving in this house. I’ve got Mariah Carey warming up in the background, twinkle lights ready to go, and a cinnamon candle burning so strong you can smell it from the driveway. 🎄🎅🏾

Now, I know some of y’all are thinking, “But what about Thanksgiving?” Don’t worry — it gets its moment. November 27th is for gratitude, good food, and that one uncle who insists on carving the turkey like it’s a competitive sport. We eat, we laugh, we nap, and we count our blessings. 🦃

But come November 28th? We’re right back in Christmas mode until the big day. The tree is glowing, the music is playing, and I’m probably stress-wrapping gifts while humming along to Boyz II Men holiday hits.

And that, my friends, is the schedule. Non-negotiable.

Thank you for coming to my TED Talk. ✌🏾

Why the Perfect First Day Is a Myth — and What Really Matters

Blog post.

Everyone tells you to have the perfect first day — but here’s the truth: it doesn’t exist. And that’s okay.

If you’ve been scrolling teacher Instagram, flipping through Pinterest checklists, or hearing stories from veteran educators, it’s easy to believe your first day should be flawless. The perfect outfit. The perfect lesson. The perfect class. But here’s a secret I wish I’d known: no first day is perfect.

And honestly? It doesn’t need to be.

Instead of chasing perfection, focus on what really matters when you walk into your classroom for the first time: connection, clarity, and calm.

🎯 Chapter Focus

Debunking the myths of the “perfect” first day

Shifting the focus from perfection to meaningful connections

Recognizing that teaching is a marathon, not a single day

Preparing readers emotionally for the chaos and unpredictability

🧱 What the First Day Really Feels Like

Chaos is normal. Students will be late, lost, distracted, or testing boundaries.

You won’t remember every name. And that’s okay — relationships build over weeks, not minutes.

Plans go sideways. Lessons will be skipped, instructions misheard, technology will fail.

Emotions run high. Yours and theirs. Expect frustration, laughter, tears — maybe all in the same hour.

📣 Teacher Voices / Real Quotes

“My first day, I forgot to pass out half the handouts. One student raised their hand and said, ‘You forgot us.’ I laughed and cried at the same time.” — First-Year Teacher, New York“The first day never goes perfectly. I stopped chasing that illusion and started focusing on connecting with one student at a time.” — 3rd Grade Teacher, Texas“I wish someone had told me: don’t try to control everything. Let the day breathe.” — High School Math Teacher, California

📉 What the Data Doesn’t Say

First-day “success” isn’t measured by engagement in the first 45 minutes. It’s measured by relationship building over months.

Stress levels spike for first-year teachers — and that burnout isn’t reflected in test scores or evaluation rubrics.

A lesson plan executed perfectly doesn’t guarantee learning or connection. The human element is invisible in data but everything in practice.

🛠️ How Teachers Try to Survive

Prioritizing a few key routines rather than a perfect schedule.

Having a go-to icebreaker or “welcome activity” to create calm.

Accepting flexibility: swapping, skipping, or improvising lessons as needed.

Focusing on one student at a time to feel small wins.

Using humor, honesty, and authenticity to reset the energy in the room.

🗣 Real Talk for the Reader

Let me be honest with you: your first day will feel messy. You’ll forget names, fumble instructions, and wonder if anyone noticed the lesson that went sideways. And that’s okay.

The pressure to be perfect? It’s a trap. Students don’t need perfect. They need you — consistent, calm, human, and present.

So yes, there will be moments you want to hide in the copy room or cry in the parking lot. That’s normal too. But every small win counts: a student smiling, a question asked, a rule understood. Those little victories are the foundation of respect, trust, and connection.

Forget the Pinterest checklist. Forget the flawless script. Focus on showing up, staying grounded, and doing the next right thing. That’s what the first day is really about.

By Shantel Patt: September 17, 2025

Joy isn’t a one-time fix — it’s an ongoing practice.

As we wrap up this series, it’s time to think about how to keep joy alive for the long haul.

Building your joy toolkit

Set boundaries. Protect your time and energy.

Prioritize self-care. Regular rest, hobbies, and support matter.

Stay connected. Lean on your community.

Practice gratitude. Notice and celebrate the good.

Allow imperfection. You don’t have to be perfect to be effective.

The journey continues

Teaching is a marathon, not a sprint. With intention and care, joy can be your steady companion.

Keep showing up. Keep believing in yourself. And keep choosing joy — every day, even when it’s hard.

Blog post.

Teacher Burnout Is Real — And It's Only September

Being a teacher is truly a lot — mentally, physically, and spiritually.

From the outside looking in, many see the decorated classroom, the lesson plans, the school holidays, and maybe even assume we "have it easy." But the reality? It's barely September, and I already feel mentally drained.

Teacher burnout is very real. And for many of us, it doesn't wait until the spring semester to show up. Sometimes, it’s just a few weeks into the school year when the exhaustion hits like a wave — long days, endless grading, classroom management, emotional labor, the pressure to meet standards, support every student, and still somehow take care of our own lives outside the classroom.

We carry a lot.

We absorb more than we ever speak aloud.

We pour into every child, every day, even when we feel completely empty ourselves.

Being a teacher means constantly adapting, advocating, managing chaos with grace, and giving pieces of yourself away — over and over again. And we do it because we care. Deeply.

But caring so much can also be heavy. And yes, draining.

So today, I’m asking: Please pray for us teachers.

Pray for our minds — that we can stay focused and clear despite the noise.

Pray for our bodies — that we can have the energy to keep going.

Pray for our spirits — that we don’t lose our fire in the middle of the grind.

We need support. We need understanding. And sometimes, we just need someone to say, “You’re doing enough. You’re doing a good job. Take a breath.”

To all the teachers out there feeling like me: You’re not alone. Let’s normalize talking about the hard parts of this job — not just the wins. Let’s check on each other, and most importantly, give ourselves the same compassion we offer our students.

We are human. We are trying. We are tired.

But we are also strong — even when we’re stretched thin.

Hang in there. 💛

— A tired but still hopeful teacher
