There’s something about the first day of fall that makes me want to slow down.
The seasons change quietly. The air begins to feel different. The days get a little shorter, and somehow, we’re reminded that life keeps moving whether we’re ready for the next season or not.
And as I step into this new season, my hope is simple: that we treat one another with a little more kindness.
As a teacher, I see every day how much our words matter. A few encouraging words can change the way a child sees themselves. A little patience can turn a difficult moment around. Sometimes, simply knowing that someone sees you and believes in you can make all the difference.
And outside of the classroom, I’m a wife, a mother, a friend, and a woman still figuring out some things along the way. I’m reminded in those spaces too that the way we speak to one another matters.
We never really know what someone else is carrying.
The person who seems distracted might be overwhelmed. The person who seems quiet might be having a difficult day. The person who looks like they have everything together may be holding more than we realize.
That doesn’t mean we have to excuse unkind behavior or allow people to treat us poorly. Kindness can still have boundaries. Grace doesn’t mean ignoring what hurts.
But we can choose how we speak to people.
We can pause before responding.
We can give someone a little room to be human.
We can remember that our words can stay with someone long after the conversation ends.
Sometimes kindness looks like a smile. Sometimes it’s checking in. Sometimes it’s listening instead of immediately trying to fix something. Sometimes it’s simply choosing not to add more heaviness to a moment that already feels heavy.
And honestly, I think we could all use a little more of that.
This season, I’m thinking about the energy I want to carry with me into my classroom, my home, my marriage, my friendships, and all the little everyday moments in between.
I don’t need to have everything figured out. I just want to keep becoming more intentional about how I show up.
More patient.
More present.
More willing to give grace.
More mindful of the way my words land.
Because sometimes growth looks less like becoming someone new and more like becoming a little more thoughtful about the person you already are.
So, as we welcome fall, maybe that can be one of the things we make room for.
More kindness. More grace. More humanity. 🍂🩷✨
Here’s to a new season—and to remembering that the way we make people feel matters.
And if you’re in a season of slowing down, reflecting, and making a little more room for what matters, you can find more of those thoughts over on Quietly Becoming. ✨
