A Personal Reminder: Don’t Skip Your Yearly Mammogram

Every year, around this time, I circle a date on my calendar that means more to me than just a medical appointment. It’s my annual mammogram. And I’m writing this as a gentle, heartfelt reminder—especially to those of you who, like me, sometimes put your own needs on the back burner—to make that appointment and keep it.

For a long time, I didn’t give mammograms much thought. I felt healthy, and life was busy. But staying consistent with my annual screenings turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve made. During one of my routine scans, doctors found abnormal lumps that I never would have known were there. I had no pain, no symptoms—but the mammogram saw what I couldn’t.

Thankfully, those findings were caught early, and we were able to take the right steps quickly. That moment changed everything for me. It turned a once-a-year “chore” into something I now see as an act of self-respect and self-care.

Getting a mammogram is a simple act, but it’s powerful. It’s not just a task to check off—it’s a way to show up for yourself and your future.

So here I am, writing this for you—my friends, my sisters, my coworkers, my readers—because I care. If you’re over 40, have a family history of breast cancer, or your doctor has recommended it: please don’t wait. Call. Schedule. Show up.

It’s one small appointment that could make a life-changing difference.

Already got yours this year? Amazing. Now remind someone you love to do the same. Because we don’t talk about this enough—and we should.

Let’s take care of ourselves. Let’s look out for each other. Let’s make this a priority.

With love and urgency,

Shantel Patt

P.S. If you're nervous or have questions about what to expect during a mammogram, I’m here to share what I’ve learned—or just listen.
