Make Room to Breathe 💚

Making Room for Your Mind: A World Mental Health Day Reflection 💚

Life gets busy. Between work, family, responsibilities, and all the little things that seem to need our attention, it’s easy to spend so much time caring for everyone else that we forget to check in with ourselves.

As a teacher, wife, mother, and woman, I know how easy it is to get caught up in doing all the things. There’s always something to finish, someone who needs you, or another item waiting on that never-ending to-do list. But somewhere in the middle of it all, we need to make room for ourselves, too.

Sometimes, taking care of your mind can look like the simplest things. Enjoying your favorite drink. Getting lost in a good book. Listening to music that shifts your mood. Stepping outside for some fresh air. Putting your phone down and giving yourself a few quiet minutes.

And maybe it looks like coloring just because you want to. 🎨

Not because it needs to be perfect. Not because you’re creating something to share. Not because it has to lead to something productive. Just because it feels good to slow down and enjoy a moment that belongs to you.

We don't always have to turn our quiet moments into something more. Sometimes, the beauty is in simply being present.

Self-care isn't selfish. You can love your family and still need time alone. You can care deeply about your students and still need to step away from the demands of the classroom. You can show up for the people you love while recognizing that your own well-being matters, too.

And you don't have to wait until you're completely exhausted to give yourself permission to pause. Small moments of rest and creativity can be meaningful ways to reconnect with yourself. And when things feel heavy, reaching out to someone you trust or seeking professional support is a meaningful part of caring for your mental health, too.

This World Mental Health Day, consider this your gentle reminder: You are more than your responsibilities. More than your productivity. More than the list of things you still need to accomplish. You deserve care, too. 💚

So, give yourself permission to slow down. Take a breath. Pick up those coloring pencils. Read a few pages. Sit quietly for a moment without feeling guilty about what you could be doing instead.

You matter in the middle of all the doing, too.

What's one little thing you do to take care of your mental well-being? I'd love to hear what helps you reset. 🌿
