Positive Practices That Change Everything

By Shantel Patt — August 20, 2025

The difference between a good day and a great day in the classroom often comes down to habits — simple, positive routines that create space for connection, learning, and joy.

You don’t need to overhaul your entire teaching style overnight. Instead, try introducing small, manageable practices that shift the classroom atmosphere and your own experience.

Examples of positive practices

  • Morning check-ins. Start class with a quick question or mood check to build connection and ease into the day.
  • Celebrate effort, not just outcomes. Acknowledge the hard work and growth you see in students, even if the final answer isn’t perfect.
  • Intentional movement breaks. A few minutes to stretch or move can refresh energy and focus for everyone.
  • End-of-day gratitude. Invite students (and yourself!) to share something positive before closing.

Why these matter

Positive practices aren’t just “nice” — they help regulate stress, build community, and model emotional intelligence. And the ripple effect? More joy for you, your students, and your classroom culture.
